May 13, 2023 / 13 de mayo de 2023: Social Saturday Intergenerational Gathering / sábado social reunión intergeneracional

[En español abajo]

Join Positive Images LGBTQIA+ Center and North Bay LGBTQI Families for a Social Saturday: Intergenerational Gathering on May 13th from 11-2pm at Pepperwood Preserve! (for GPS, please use: 2130 Pepperwood Preserve Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95404)

All LGBTQIA+ youth, families, adults, and elders are welcome at Social Saturdays, which are a recurring series of monthly events taking place throughout Sonoma County where we are seeking to bring together members of our community across generations, particularly gender expansive youth, teens, and adults.

At our May gathering, guest facilitators Ciel Muir “Mr. Fox” (he/him), a queer and trans California naturalist, and Holland Gistelli (she/her), an Education Program Coordinator with Pepperwood Preserve, will facilitate a group nature journaling activity. They will also lead us in an optional easy to moderate hike. Additional activities will include lawn games such as cornhole and ladder ball.

Within Pepperwood Preserve, we will meet at the Bechtel House, which includes bathrooms, picnic tables, a covered deck with a beautiful view. To get there, pass the barn and lower parking lot and proceed left, UPHILL for another 1/4 mile. Turn LEFT at fork (following sign pointing towards Bechtel House) and continue up the road to the Bechtel House. Park in the gravel lot and go to the main house building. Carpooling is encouraged since parking is limited, and it is better for our planet!

The optional hike will be up to 1 mile, at a slow pace, and cover varied terrain including areas with uneven footing. Please bring lunch/snacks, water, and sun protection (hat, sunscreen). Wear sturdy shoes or boots (sandals are not recommended). We recommend wearing long pants (for protection from poison oak, ticks, and prickly plants). Dress in layers for the weather, as it can get cold and windy even on clear days. Optional items include field guides, notebook, camera, and binoculars. Be sure to bring any medications you may need. Please leave pets at home.

Pepperwood requires all adult participants to sign a waiver that you can access online at the link below, or complete on paper at the event:

https://pepperwood.tfaforms.net/6 (where it asks what event you are attending, write in “May 13 Social Saturday”)

For parents, caregivers, and families, this month’s gathering will also include an opportunity to share your input regarding the kinds of programs and engagement that you would be most interested in!

We’re excited to see you then!

November 12: Free LGBTQIA+ Legal Clinic / 12 de noviembre: Clínica legal gratuita LGBTQIA +

[En español abajo]

A free legal clinic hosted by Crocker Law, North Bay LGBTQI Families, and Positive Images LGBTQIA+ Center will take place on the Empire College of Law Campus (3035 Cleveland Avenue, Santa Rosa) on Saturday, November 12 from 11am-3pm to help our community. Specifically, attorneys and paralegals will be available to assist with forms and procedure for securing legal parentage between parents and children, as well as legal name and/or gender marker changes. This event will be held in combination with the November Social Saturday Intergenerational Gathering hosted each month by Positive Images LGBTQIA+ Center and North Bay LGBTQI Families.

In light of the recent US Supreme Court rulings, it is more important than ever to secure the rights of LGBTQIA+ families and people. In California, if you are married or in a state registered domestic partnership, you are automatically legal parents to children born during the marriage or partnership. However, marriage or domestic partnership certificates and birth certificates are not court orders and thus not required to be recognized by other states as proof of legal parentage. Only a court order (a document signed by a Judge) will be recognized across state lines. For people who are married or registered domestic partners, the second parent adoption process results in the necessary court order. For those who are not married or registered domestic partners or who conceived via reciprocal IVF (one spouse/partner provides genetic material and the other carries the child in the pregnancy), the legal parentage process results in the necessary court order.

Art activities and/or childcare will be available for those who are interested during or while they are waiting for their appointment time(s) with an attorney or paralegal. Spanish translation and ASL interpretation are also available.

Please sign up if you need these services with regard to legal parentage and/or legal name and/or gender marker changes. Submit the interest form below to assist us with planning, and we will reach out soon with further details such as individual appointment times and information regarding what you should bring. Contact us at northbaylgbtqifamilies@gmail.com with any questions!

All LGBTQIA+ youth, families, adults, and elders are welcome at Social Saturdays, which are a recurring series of monthly events taking place throughout Sonoma County where we are seeking to bring together members of our community across generations, particularly gender expansive youth, teens, and adults.

Due to the recent COVID-19 spike and resulting County health order, we feel that it is best to wait until a future month to gather, but in the meantime want to continue providing community support through the distribution of our LGBTQIA+ family and community self-care kits. With the support of our amazing local art and business community, we have assembled a number of kits to distribute this month to folks on a drive-thru basis. Care packages include art supplies, Noble Folk ice cream tokens, rose quartz stones, seeds, and more! Additionally, we will have a number of free rapid antigen test kits available to take home for folks who may need them.

We will also have $50 gift cards available to families for whom financial barriers such as the cost of gas, a meal, or missed work would otherwise prevent them from driving through to pick up a self-care kit. July 10: Social Saturday Intergenerational Picnic

Join Positive Images LGBTQIA+ Center and North Bay LGBTQI Families for a Social Saturday Intergenerational Picnic on July 10 from 12-3pm at Julliard Park in Santa Rosa!

All LGBTQIA+ youth, families, adults, and elders are welcome at this picnic, which will be the first in a recurring series of monthly events where we will seek to bring together members of our community across generations, particularly gender expansive youth, teens, and adults.

For our July gathering, we will be hosting an informal hangout allowing space for folks to socialize, relax, and play as much [or as little] as they choose. In addition to a lovely shaded space at the park, we will have an art station for youth and anyone else who is feeling creative!

Please feel free to bring any chairs, blankets, or snacks you would like. We will have water and a small selection of pre-packaged snacks available. Street parking is free and usually easy to find on South A Street. The park is ADA accessible. There are not open restrooms at Juilliard Park, unfortunately.

We will have $50 gift cards available at the picnic to families for whom financial barriers such as the cost of gas, a meal, or missed work would otherwise prevent them from attending. If you feel your family could benefit from this support, please fill out the form at the following link:

June 24: Whole Brain Parenting (and Partnering): The Magic Wand for High Functioning Relationships

Join North Bay LGBTQI Families for a Zoom workshop conducted by Nick Lawrence, M.A., the Director of Tools for Life, Inc., on Thursday, June 24 from 6:30-8pm on Whole Brain Parenting (and Partnering). This workshop is based on The Whole-Brain Child Workbook, by Daniel Siegel, M.D., and Tina Bryson, PhD.

Emotional “flooding” is a natural part of being human. Unfortunately, many humans learn to view emotional outbursts as negative or manipulative behaviors. Teaching parents how to see floods as “signals” from their child’s (or partner or self’s) brain, instead of manipulative or intentional bad behavior is a heart-centered transformation for many people. Learning new ways to recognize signals and then create communication tools for individuals and families is a powerful, highly bonding experience that can positively impact self-esteem and self-efficacy in profound ways. Register here for this free event!

June 16: Community Conversation on Chosen Family

Join North Bay LGBTQI Families and Sonoma County Pride for a conversation on Chosen Family on Wednesday, June 16 from 5:30pm-7:30pm via Zoom! This will be the third in a series of weekly online Sonoma County Pride “Friends of Dorothy” Community Conversations that will be occurring throughout Pride month. At this event we will hear from an intergenerational panel regarding their experiences of building community through chosen family, and the role that these relationships have played in their lives over time as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. You can register for this free event here, and share the event on Facebook here!

June 13: All Ages Family Hike

Join North Bay LGBTQI Families and Sonoma County Pride for an all ages family hike at Foothill Regional Park in Windsor on Sunday, June 13 from 10am to 12pm! Our All Ages Family Pride Hike will be led by C.L. Teravainen (He/Him), a queer and Trans California Naturalist. A former environmental educator with Sonoma County Regional Parks, C.L. enjoys sharing his love of art and the outdoors with those around him. When not exploring the outdoors he enjoys spending time as a plant and cat dad while working on his own art. C.L. has also facilitated the North Bay LGBTQI Families monthly social and family gathering for gender-expansive youth under 12.

The theme of the hike activities that C.L. is leading for us will be Community Through Nature. The idea of community is a group or feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals. Within the LGBTQIA+ Community we experience this wholeheartedly, coming together in support of each other. We help each other grow with our identities. In a sense this is also a recipe found in nature. Nature, in different environments, has community. All species living in a given area, interacting with each other. Plants and animals working together to thrive as a whole. On the hike we will not only find ourselves as observers within the space of nature as a community, but we, ourselves, will ideally have a better understanding of our own community. At the beginning of the hike all youth participants will receive their own nature journal and pencil to document any observations they wish. Towards the end of the hike we will not only share as a group what we noticed and wondered about the environment at Foothill, but youth participants will have the opportunity to personalize their journals through art based activities with supplies provided.

Regional Parks staff will be present and available at this event to interact with families, and will bring some nature-related show and tell items from the park for kids to explore. While families should bring water and snacks, there will be some additional light refreshments on hand. Participants should try to arrive around 9:50 if possible, and meet in the parking lot by the bathrooms (there is street parking available if needed).

You can register for this free event here, and share the event on Facebook here!

June 12: Pride Picnic in the Park!
